Are Snakes Affectionate?

Snakes as pets might be controversial for some people, but others find them to be nice, quiet creatures that require minimal maintenance. Naturally, with a cat or a dog, you can tell when they are expressing affection to you, but what about snakes?

Snakes can’t show affection in any way because they lack the mental capacity to do so. They can only experience basic, instinctual feelings and not complex emotions like happiness, sadness, or love. However, they might show tolerance to your presence by allowing you to handle and feed them.

If you’re curious to learn more about snakes and how they show love, read on. I will answer all the possible questions about what snakes feel and perceive and if they really love their owners.

Do Snakes Feel Emotions?

Whether it expresses them or not, you might wonder if your snake experiences different emotions the way humans or mammals in general do. Because it’s hard to tell with limited facial expressions or body language, you might think your snake is feeling emotions, and it just can’t express them the right way.

However, snakes can only feel emotions linked to their basic instincts, like fear, apprehension, or aggression. They most likely can’t experience happiness, sadness, or other emotions similar to humans. Snakes might experience something akin to pleasure when they are fed or stroked.

Understandably, some pet owners would beg to differ, saying they can recognize when their snake is depressed or excited. Unfortunately, in most cases, there’s a higher chance that your snake is physically ill rather than expressing emotions.

Do Snakes Feel Love?

Snakes are intellectually incapable of feeling love. They have a small frontal lobe, which suggests that they are incapable of feeling anything that is not related to basic instincts. This explains why they are solitary creatures, and mother snakes don’t even care for their offspring.

Naturally, this also means they can’t feel hate or dislike towards anyone. If you see your snake being aggressive or behaving unusually with you, don’t take it personally; chances are your snake is feeling threatened by something, or it’s feeling physically uncomfortable or unwell.

Do Snakes Have Feelings?

Snakes have very basic feelings with very instinctual needs behind them. Snakes can feel hunger, pain, discomfort, pleasure, and more. Naturally, all of these feelings are responses to physical stimuli and are not associated in any way with emotions.

For instance, your snake might feel pain because it’s got an injury but not because its companion died. It will express this feeling unconsciously by behaving unusually.

Your snake may also seem aggressive when it perceives a threat, expressing it by hissing or attacking. It may express fear by moving away. Anything more complicated than that is out of their range.

Do Snakes Love Their Owners?

You may spend a lot of time with your snake, feeding it, handling it, and cleaning after it. You know by now that your snake isn’t intellectually capable of much, but is it able to feel some sort of love or affection toward the person that takes care of it every day?

Snakes aren’t capable of an emotion like love. As mentioned above, they can only feel instinctual emotions linked to survival. Snakes can’t feel love or affection toward their owner or anyone else because they don’t have the intellectual development to do so.

Can My Snake Recognize Me?

Snakes may recognize you somehow, associating your smell with good outcomes, like feeding or stroking. However, they can’t recognize you like humans or other pets. Their senses of sight and hearing are almost useless for recognition, so they aren’t capable of identifying your face or voice or distinguishing you from any other human.

However, snakes might be able to smell you because you feed them. They might associate your smell with food as a result of conditioning, but again, it’s unlikely they will remember your scent and be able to tell it apart from other people’s scents.

How To Tell if My Snake Likes Me

Based on what I’ve covered so far, you’ll know that your snake isn’t exactly able to like you the way other humans like you. Nevertheless, snakes may feel comfortable and calm around you, which is a sign that it doesn’t perceive you as a threat.

Some typical signs that show your snake might enjoy your company:

  • Accepting to be handled
  • Accepting food and eating in front of you
  • Sleeping or resting on you
  • Moving to the side of the enclosure that’s closest to you when you approach

Naturally, these are all reactions to your presence as a provider of food and heat, but it does show that your snake doesn’t see you as something to be afraid of.

Conclusions

Snakes lack the brain development to be affectionate or experience certain feelings and emotions. They can only have feelings related to their basic instincts, like fear of a potential threat or pleasure of eating.

It’s unlikely that your snake loves you or anyone else, and it may not be able to tell you apart from other people. However, as long as you’re feeding and holding them, they may show signs of being comfortable around you, which is as positive of a reaction as you’ll get from these mysterious creatures.
