How To Probe Your Corn Snake

To probe your corn snake, follow the steps outlined below. The process is meant to sex the snake, not kill it. Always be extra cautious and gentle while handling the snake.

Gently follow this process:

1. Gently handle the snake and place it on a flat surface, such as a table or counter. You might need extra hands to help hold the snake face up and support the middle part of the snake. Don’t grasp it from underneath the head as it interferes with its normal breathing.  
2. Locate the snake’s vent, which is located at the base of the tail.
3. Carefully insert a probe, which is a thin metal rod, into the vent, being careful not to cause any harm or injury to the snake. Ball-tipped probes are considered the safest and should be used if available. In the absence of a ball-tipped probe, a dull-tipped one can be used, but it should be longer, not exceeding 4 mm (0.16”),  for extra caution. 
4. Slowly insert the probe until you feel the snake’s hemipenes, which are located near the base of the tail. 
5. Measure the probe’s distance from the vent to the hemipenes to determine the snake’s sex. If the probe went in a couple of scales, the corn snake is more likely a female and a male if the probe covers between 8 to 16 scales.

How To Pop a Corn Snake
